Problem with making new characters is that no one will want to read them, though. It's hard to get people to pay attention to brand new characters in comics. It kind of sucks.

True, but if they are going to make this a publicity stunt (And having the character kiss his boyfriend to introduce his sexuality seems to indicate) then they don't need to use a well known character.

At best nobody is going to pay attention to this
At worst the Green Lantern is going to become a gay pride symbol, which really sucks for long term fans who don't want to seem like they are fervent supporters of gay pride just because they have Green Lantern Gear.

I just think its botched all around

Well how would you reveal a charater to be gay in a comic? You kind of have to show it because there's not a lot of room for expositional dialogue. The other option is to have the character announce that he's gay? And you can't just have characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!
Also this Green Lantern is different from the mainstream space cop Green Lanterns, and they have different symbols. But most people probably won't realize that!

And yeah Batwoman is awesome but sadly she probably wouldn't be nearly as popular if she wasn't tangentally related to Batman somehow. Hell her stories barely even deal with him other than taking place in Gotham, she's pretty much just Batwoman because the Bat is a huge symbol. Bunker's different since he's in a team book, which makes it easier to have diverse casts. A Bunker solo series out of nowhere probably would not have done as well.
