Problem with making new characters is that no one will want to read them, though. It's hard to get people to pay attention to brand new characters in comics. It kind of sucks.
True, but if they are going to make this a publicity stunt (And having the character kiss his boyfriend to introduce his sexuality seems to indicate) then they don't need to use a well known character.
At best nobody is going to pay attention to this
At worst the Green Lantern is going to become a gay pride symbol, which really sucks for long term fans who don't want to seem like they are fervent supporters of gay pride just because they have Green Lantern Gear.
I just think its botched all around
OK so your solution is no more gay characters ever.
My solution is to work in sexuality into a story line over time instead of going GUESS WHAT GUYS! GREEN LANTERN IS GAY NOW!
