Had few redeeming qualities, but the battle system was alright, if totally archaic.

The towns in Earthbound blew my mind at the time since they were so big. I don't think it's amazing, but a lot of people are put off by the fact it's not some story of a gallant hero and hot heroine saving the world from dragons or something, undeservingly. Which is lame.
And you're beyond help if you think that this is the reason people don't dry hump Earthbound's story. It has far more problems with its delivery, pacing, and cohesion, but I guess you wouldn't notice since it seems that it's a fandom requirement to wear rose tinted lenses.
