My Score 8.3 - Much much better than the original but still I couldn't help but find it a tad overrated.
The towns in Earthbound blew my mind at the time since they were so big. I don't think it's amazing, but a lot of people are put off by the fact it's not some story of a gallant hero and hot heroine saving the world from dragons or something, undeservingly. Which is lame.
Had few redeeming qualities, but the battle system was alright, if totally archaic.

And you're beyond help if you think that this is the reason people don't dry hump Earthbound's story. It has far more problems with its delivery, pacing, and cohesion, but I guess you wouldn't notice since it seems that it's a fandom requirement to wear rose tinted lenses.

I'm probably the second person who dislikes Nintendo the most on this board, only because Vlado is around, so I dunno where this rose tinted glasses talk is coming from. I didn't see any real problems with cohesion (sometimes you had to squint to understand what the Mr. Saturns were saying, not much else) nor with delivery or pacing. If you wanna talk bad pacing, let's talk Final Fantasy XIII!
6.5/10, mostly because of the non sequiturs. I didn't care about the plot, the enemies, the characters in my party, or what quests I was on - I just loved talking to everybody. I also liked the idea of a rolling health system.

It's funny because this is one of the reasons I love it - because it didn't have that.
I find a lot of jRPGs so samey, EB was like a breath of fresh air. Charming game as well.

I guess that means I'm "beyond help," then- and Christ, don't you think that's a little strong? Do you even read what you write?- because the story of EarthBound *is* the reason I'd give it the perfect score. No, it doesn't follow a traditional schema; yes, the plot developments are infrequent. But the game is simply masterful at getting you invested in its world. Each of its cities and locales is brimming with quirkiness and personality, and for what it's worth, never have I seen a game balance childlike enthusiasm with deep existential themes before like EarthBound.
...But you know, "beyond help" and all that.

last-minute bump for more votes (because given Bio's vote, I'm curious about how B8 feels about this game overall; maybe the reception here is more negative than I realized!)
