Was thinking basically this, though I don't see what the flaw in D2's system is and why they decided to change it. It's not possible to get single player characters onto closed battle.net is it? Like I think there was an exploit once or twice that had open characters into the closed realm but that was fixed easily enough.
You can auction house single player stuff, it is to prevent cheating if I were to guess.
