Eh, don't see anything wrong with this. After the proliferation of DLC and stuff, we're too far down this path. It honestly doesn't sound too different from DLC anyway.

Worth noting for folks who don't look at the screens or anything that you can buy CHARACTERS on this auction house as well.

Also the game's going to require being connected online at all times, and there's a 10 character limit.

i don't really care too deeply about this. if someone wants to pay to get ahead, that is their choice, and if it helps the game company too, so be it. for someone like me who is low on money and likes to play games, it might even be a way to make a slight bit of monies. there are still plenty of unknowns that will be worked out, but as it is stated so far, it looks like it might actually be a good thing in the long term, probably not nearly as horrible as this board wants to make it out to be...

at least it isn't gambling :p

WoW players developed their own economy, exchanging real money for characters and in-game gold. Blizzard is just giving the people what they want while pocketing some of the IRL loot for themselves. Doesn't seem bad to me.

Apparently you don't allot points to skills anymore either. You just get them once and they scale with you. Wonder if they trashed the skill system in favor of the WoW-esque talent tree.

and here i thought people learned this was f'ing dumb when Ubisoft did it with AC2.
short answer: by the day after release, it won't be. one way or another.

i give it a month before they cave officially and go the exact same route.

haha, no. ubisoft's just willing to bs the fact that they got their servers wrecked, it was cracked in a day,

and they initially denied all that or pretended it was something positive ('oh a lot of traffic on our servers MUST MEAN A LOT OF BUYERS').

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/assassinscreed2/news/6253104/pc-assassins-creed-ii-stumbles-on-ubisoft-drm-server-snafu

and there was most certainly no reduction of piracy for AC2 either. that's just them talking out their asses to an imaginary fairy as i've no idea how in the hell they'd get those figures. just checked to see how Brotherhood's doing on the main torrent site everyone knows. doin' better than black ops and crysis 2. short version goes Ubi tries to sound good. to give the rundown of how AC2 went:

- released in europe.
- cracked day 1. ubisoft claimed it the crack was something 'incomplete.'
- server emulator within a week to mimic their system entirely.
- cracked fully in a month.

....so uh... can't say it worked in terms of stopping the damage. and certainly can't say it stopped people downloading it seeing how big a torrent was in general all around that was, by no means, a small quantity of people.

I wouldn't bet on it. These big companies are just trending off of each other and it creates a big pool of stupidity. These are the same people trying to get rid of used games. You know, part of what helps drive the market and enables people to check out types of games that they otherwise wouldn't. They just want to control everything and this trend will continue and what we're already seeing and what we'll continue to see are companies that aren't quite big enough, no longer being able to compete with the huge companies. I guess one good thing to come out of this will be an influx of indie games.

this. Gaming has pretty much become a few companies controlling everything, and then indie developers. I like super meat boy as much as the next guy, but i mean indie games suffer from being quite primitive.

Oh come now, doomsaying like that is just silly.
It's hard to say gaming's dying when Catherine came out a week ago and EVO just ended with a better showing than ever before. Nevermind the fact that there's still quite a few good, quality companies, as well as a TON who still put out great games. Activision (and now by extension Blizzard) are bad, but to say they control the industry or are even a standard for it is nutty.

i'd sooner associate it with they're trying to convince themselves that it's working more than anything else. nobody likes it, the piracy's high, and it's already been proven ineffective - both as a means to not crack the game (very first game like this in a month 100%, in a day to playable form) and the system used (server emulator, which... is honestly the easier of the two to fool the game with, and thus quicker).

as for this situation, i'd sooner bet Blizzard did more of this than Activision. they definitely are behind the auction house ideas after WoW. the drm that part i'm not sure. doubt 10 characters limit stays though, can easily see them raise it in later expansion packs (only it seems they've the decency/foresight to not also go 'hey we're 3 parting this game' this time). but that drm is just weird. can see Blizzard just because of WoW and they might go 'well this many people went on the MMO soo...". though i'd also assume they know better too, ditto for Activision staying out of Blizzard's way. just weird.

I can't believe you guys didn't think Activision was out to ruin gaming. Whatever turns a buck, they couldn't care less about what the average consumer thinks. And they know people will do it, because Nintendo made an entire generation of suckers out of the casual market with their complete joke of a system. Gamers are stuck to whatever the whim of companies like Capcom and Activision want, and they're complete sheep that will just further their cause.
