Nina's pretty bad too, but I can't stand shirley.
I would absolutely love this anime (or manga since that is my actual experience with the series) if Ryoma wasn't in it. By far my least favorite character on the team and one of my least favorite in the whole series.
Ryoma's easily my least favorite main character too, yeah.
Seigaku has some great characters (Fuji, Inui, Kaidoh, Tezuka) aside from him, though, and then there's also Fudomine (Which is great all around), Hyoutei (Atobe's my favorite in the series, probably), Rokkaku (Another solid cast all around), and the various one-off schools that show up. Probably the only school I don't like is Rikkai.
