10) Rurouni Kenshin --Great series, especially the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs. Textbook case of "the manga is better" and the filler hell ending 'no thanks', especially instead of Jinchu. Best character: Saito.
9) Dragonball --**** Z. The less serious comedy shounen is where it's at. Objectively probably not much more than "alright", but so goddamn fun to watch. Best Fight: Goku vs Tien at whatever world tournament
8) Bakemonogatari --I still haven't finished it but "so good". Also Senjougahara also "so good".
7) Megas XLR --WHO CARES THAT IT'S NOT ACTUALLY AN ANIME, IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH AND WORTHY OF A MENTION. *ahem*. This is even more fun to watch than Dragonball. Best Button:
6) Puella Magi Madoka Magica --Literally finished watching this on the fourth of July. It was pretty thought-provoking and depressing for a lot of it. Best Character: Madoka's Mom
5) The Prince of Tennis --This would be #1 if we considered the manga, too, because this is a textbook "the manga is better". Trails off into filler after the Kanto tournament, some of which is surprisingly decent. Also in terms of quality starts off kinda slow then picks up to the levels you'd expect from something good as you move on. Also the National Arc OVAs are worth noting because they're legit great. Best Match: Tezuka vs Atobe
4) Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni --I don't feel like justifying this one because it should really justify itself. VN is far better but the fact that the anime is as good as it is should be a testament to the quality of the whole series. Best Part: **** Yeah Akasaka
3) Code Geass --R1 is your standard great anime. R2 is your standard pretty damn good anime combined with "HOLY **** THIS IS ENTERTAINING". Best Part: I am fond enough of Orange to say that every time he fights (on Lelouch's side) is great. Worst Character: Shirley. *****.
2) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya --I liked Endless Eight. Seriously. The rest was at least as good, too. Best episode: The Day of Sagittarius.

Ryoma's easily my least favorite main character too, yeah.
Seigaku has some great characters (Fuji, Inui, Kaidoh, Tezuka) aside from him, though, and then there's also Fudomine (Which is great all around), Hyoutei (Atobe's my favorite in the series, probably), Rokkaku (Another solid cast all around), and the various one-off schools that show up. Probably the only school I don't like is Rikkai.

Madoka only has two characters (Homura and Madoka's mom). The rest are plot devices.
You did not mention Momo, that saddens me. Honestly though, the entire rest of Seigaku was great, even Kawamura became awesome later on. Fudomine was awesome and I wish we had gotten the rematch. Atobe is awesome for being able to do all he does without any of that super power bs that the other top guys use. I also love the copycat guy on that team. Rokkaku was never a real favorite for me but they were good. Shienhoji (stupid censor bypass thing) has some great players. I actually really like Rikkai overall, they have a lot of cool players that make for very good matches. I especially like Akaya.
The only character I dislike more than Ryoma is the crazy wildchild kid that they basically just made to be a rival to Ryoma. But at least Ryoma had a reason for being so amazing.
Honestly, my biggest issue with the series was how everyone could lose but Ryoma. Fuji and Tezuka, the Golden Pair, the Big Three of Rikkai, Keigo, all of them were supposed to be insanely good but all lost matches (some of them regularly). Meanwhile Ryoma just keeps on winning absoluletly everything, no matter how overmatched he is or how much better the story would be if he lost. Other people have to take losses that don't make sense story wise just to make Ryoma's victories mean more.
That and the really stupid twist at the very end involving the third door. That was just dumb.

As for Ryoma, he never should have won his first match against the Big Three. And I believe there was another match where he beat Keigo or some other #1 singles after the team had already clinched. It would have been a perfect chance for him to get a loss that makes him start really taking things seriously.
Instead we just kept getting "oh no Ryoma can't win", pulls out new move/power-up/whatever, "oh look, Ryoma just dominated him".

Yep. Most of us are hoping it's either a Brotherhood-style closer-to-the-manga reboot (complete with the Jinchuu Saga like was always intended) or at least a proper continuation post-Kyoto (as in... the Jinchuu Saga).

The match you're referring to doesn't exist. Unless you mean the one vs Kintaro, and he didn't actually win that <_<
The only times Ryoma played S1 were in the national tournament (Against Hyotei, Sh!tenhouji, and Rikkai), and in the Kantou finals against Rikkai.
Eh, it's been awhile since I read it. I just remember him having a match with a major player (like Tezuka level) and being sure that he was finally going to lose and get some character progression. It didn't happen.
That match was pretty BS. But the manga gets so ridiculous towards the end that it's so bad yet so good.
Agree so hard. I can't believe it did an amnesia plotline, and that third door was one of the dumbest twists I have ever seen.
