Opinions are mixed on Dark Empire. I enjoyed it and its sequel. It's the series where Palpatine is resurrected in a clone body and Luke becomes his apprentice for a while. There's even a nifty parallel with Episode III where Luke crash lands a huge warship on Coruscant with the aid of the Force.
They even manage to explain Palps' resurrection in a way that actually makes sense and even fits in with the prequels and his desire to live forever.
