No, you're right, the teachings of the Old Jedi Order were indeed flawed, that's why there aren't as many Jedi turning to the Dark Side in the New Jedi Order, because they're allowed to express more emotion, and more importantly, they're allowed to love.
That doesn't change that the Dark Side is still very tempting to some. Jacen Solo for example.
Jacen's turn is a prime example of how the Dark Side corrupts you. Jacen turned due to a vision that showed that if he didn't, he'd end up killing Luke and the galaxy would fall into chaos. His initial intentions were to bring order and peace to the galaxy, and he truly meant it. Like Luke, he initially thought he could control the Dark Side. More accurately, he thought that there was no real Dark or Light, only the intentions of the wielder. It didn't work out, because the more he utilized the Dark Side's power, the more vicious and violent he became.
The only disfigurement he ended up with were the yellowed eyes.
