Uh, mashing sword in front of Phantom 1's face will get you killed really easily. You need to jump slash his back for your primary way of dealing damage. Only time I'd consider attacking his face would be to Stinger his fireballs back to him.
Dude I've beaten the game 8 times and S ranked everything, don't lecture me.
I've never read anything that suggest I should just hack at his face, and that's never worked for me. I have my reasons to be skeptical.
If you hack his face while he's charging the fireball, there's a chance you'll shoot it right back at him. Naturally, this is a pretty ballsy move even by DMC standards.
That and his face is his weak spot (not his back, something I didn't find out until after DMD).
