Mistake you're making - overlooking the fact that we might not want to be saved.

C rank on the first mission

Took like 18 minutes but that s*** is hard to navigate if you don't already know how it's laid out. I only got hit a couple of times by that shriek area attack from the marionettes in the marionette room, I believe. Ended with health.

I think I picked up like three Blue Orbs, or fragments? I'm not entirely sure..

Well, I guess I've understated how much I've played this game. I played through it once on Easy like... 5 years ago or maybe more. I've played little bits of it here and there since.

So I know how hopeless the first spider can seem!

DMC1 is one of my all time favorites. Make sure you grenade cancel. Grenade launcher is your friend once you get it. I gotta play through that game again soon.

Managed to beat Phantom once, but it was after I wasted all my yellow orbs. Apparently you're not actually supposed to jump on his back like a platform and slash at him.. Not sure why I thought you were supposed to. >_> Don't know how many yellow orbs I should be willing to waste here... but probably not many.

Tried the Critical Hit mission. I'm not really sure how to do it. Hit the scissors with your sword when it tries to attack, then walk up and shotgun it. I suppose that's the process, but there's something I don't "get" about it, I guess. Will just have to keep trying, I guess, though I probably won't try too much.

And "Phantom" definitely doesn't make sense for a giant lava spider.

What's funny about the name Phantom is that right before you fight him (and if you're like me you experience this many times) you fight a bunch of creatures the name "phantom" would describe perfectly!

Yeah, I had trouble playing DMC3 at first for the same reason. Why the hell would a series mess with its own button configuration on the same system? That's just asinine. DMC3 even lets you "change" the button configuration but then it doesn't actually work properly, because you can't remap "examine" and it takes priority over attack if they're set to the same thing, so e.g. you can't activate attack switches. Fail so much, DMC3.

Then it turned out it's DMC2's fault and everything made sense. (Not that this excuses DMC3 not -fixing- this, but yeah.)

Beat the mission as well as the Secret Mission. The scissor enemy stays staggered for a lot longer than I would've expected after you parry it. Got an A rank, too.

Can you even replay stages in DMC1? I know that you can pretty much go anywhere without starting a mission after you've beaten it, but I don't think you actually start the mission.

Devil Trigger doesn't last that long!

Uh, mashing sword in front of Phantom 1's face will get you killed really easily. You need to jump slash his back for your primary way of dealing damage. Only time I'd consider attacking his face would be to Stinger his fireballs back to him.

The optional fights with Phantom where he chases you down a hallway and you can escape are really easy, though. The timing to reflect his fireballs isn't too hard to get down. Only problem will be the camera trying to point you to the escape door instead of Phantom. Plus, if you have Air Raid, he's *completely* free.

Devil Trigger's length... well, I'm stating the obvious here but it changes a lot with how many runes/purple orbs you have. When I had the 3 default runes it was pretty damn short, but it feels like I have a good amount of time in it with 5 runes. It does recharge pretty damn fast, though, especially if you can find a place to taunt.

So, Grenade Gun spam (plus canceling its recovery with a jump or roll) plus Devil Trigger only abilities (Air Raid, Vortex, Inferno, Meteor) seems like its going to make the rest of this difficulty pretty damn easy.

...Can't wait to be horribly wrong about that!

Oh, and I got Ifrit and have been saving up a whole bunch of orbs to use on it. Around... 7k or 9k? Something like that, a good chunk but not enough to buy everything. Haven't bought anything for Ifrit yet, and I still need to buy Round Trip and both levels of Vortex for Alastor. Any sort of order you guys would reccomend? I've tried out most of the powers and I'll probably go max Kick 13, buy Magma Drive (since its so cheap), then save up a bit for Inferno. After that would go and max Vortex, then max Meteor, then Rolling Blaze and finally Round Trip.

I have two Purple Orbs and (I believe) two bought Blue Orbs, I'll probably go and finish off my weapons before buying more of those unless I deem it necessary later.

Its been so long since I've had DMC1 I can't recommend any solid strategies or what skills you should be getting first.

I remember what skills are great, but I can't put names with them.

Well, after a couple more missions I'm almost done with what skills I need now, so no big deal.

Still need Vortex 2, Meteor 2, and Round Trip, then I can go on to buying the rest of the Purple and Blue Orbs. I'll buy the skills in that order, and also prioritize Purple Orbs (max DT gauge increase) over Blue Orbs (max health increase).

Bosse are honestly kind of a joke right now... With Devil Trigger I'm just able to output so much damage so quickly, and I can usually earn it back quickly enough with grenades. I have enough health and do enough damage to just tank through their s***, really.

I suppose it'll probably be different on Hard/Dante Must Die modes, but...

Also these underwater sections are f***ing horrible. Do DMC3/DMC4 have any of these?

I've never read anything that suggest I should just hack at his face, and that's never worked for me. I have my reasons to be skeptical.

If you hack his face while he's charging the fireball, there's a chance you'll shoot it right back at him. Naturally, this is a pretty ballsy move even by DMC standards.

That and his face is his weak spot (not his back, something I didn't find out until after DMD).

Yeah, you're best off just stingering when he does the fireball.

Even if his face is supposed to be his only weak spot, you can still treat his back like a weak spot, even if it's only because of wonky hit detection.

And.... finished. Dark souls with light, voices cracking, mother f***ing biplanes, etc. I think his voice actually f***ing cracked when he did that.

I finished all the secret missions but one, and that's the only Blue Orb fragment I missed. Don't think I missed any stray full Blue Orbs. Have all the guns. Have all the moves for Alastor and Ifrit fully upgraded, but I'm missing three Purple Orbs and I believe two Blue Orbs from the shop.

The secret mission I missed was the first one where you fought three Shadows in that underground mannequin room in the first mission.

One D, four Cs, ten Bs, five As, and three Ss. One of the Ss actually had a special bonus, too! Used 8 Yellow Orbs, mostly on Mission 22 with the first two Mundus fights. I think I used two on the first Nightmare fight and those were the only others.

May or may not continue with Hard mode.

Prepare to laugh out loud at a certain emotional scene late in the game where Dante's voice cracks :D

Oh and Easy mode isn't too bad but even there a certain boss near the end will make you quite angry. On Dante Must Die mode this boss has been the reason I have broken my one and only controller in my long life of gaming

I'm still not sure if Dante's voice actor in this game is just bad or if he had a bad script and not enough time or what have you... At least to me he gets what Dante should sound like right - conveys his personality well, I guess. But obviously there's plenty of times where he sounds pretty damn ridiculous.
