everyone in the EPL is overrated.
VdV goes from the bench at madrid to spurs and suddenly he's the greatest attacking mid since sliced bread.
Aguero goes from second fiddle to Forlan at Atletico to Man City and suddenly he's Argentina's best striker ever lololol.
People tend to overrate the players in their favorite league/team. Spain is no different.
My favorite team is Liverpool, but judging by current run of form I'd say that, overall, Italy is the best league in the world right now (team wise.) They might not have the best top team but they have the most depth.
It's also not really fair to compare players directly with how they perform in different leagues at different times. Teammates change, roles change, ages, skills, etc. etc. Anyone could see that Aguero was a budding star. Robben and Sneijder were great for Madrid but injuries were an issue and they've proven their worth elsewhere. VDV was always good.
Ultimately I'd say there isn't much difference at the top of the 3 big leagues (Italy, England, Spain.)
