Link isn't the reason why this contest sucks. At all.
This contest sucked because EVERY MATCH has been predictable. Link exists in 6 matches.
There are two aspects to a contest: the journey, and the end. We have eliminated the end from contests. No end result in a standard contest will be anything but predictable. The journey can still be good, but the end sucking will sour the whole thing.
Here's the thing though. I'm not sure if that's what's really being argued here. GotD gave us that. Majora's Mask wasn't supposed to win that contest. GSC was supposed to beat it earlier on.
MM winning was an upset, but I'm not so convinced people actually want an upset so much as they want Zelda to lose. There's an obvious overlap between the two, but I think GotD highlighted where they don't. People seem so caught up in Zelda winning all the time that they're overlooking that MM was a change in the "end" and instead backpedaled and claimed that wasn't really a change because it's Zelda.
