I'm sitting on a 61 match winning streak with 57 other people by refusing to pick a single upset. our best rivalry has turned into a 60/40. our voter pool has been cut in half. three of the final four come from the same company (and, based on this match, it might be the strongest three). we have a userbase obsessed with nostalgia. the strongest new character from the past ten years would probably get beaten by at least 20-25 other guys.
you had a good run, GameFAQs contests. time to exit quietly into the night.
You're just bitter. You wanna can it before even opening up the field twofold? Please realize that even with all this Nintendomination, GameFAQs is still "friendlier" to Square games and Japanese RPGs than any other large gaming site on the internet. At least Cloud isn't struggling against Kratos like he would anywhere else.

I'm not bitter! I've been thinking this for a couple of weeks now. I'm not even surprised by this result.
these things don't have half the juice that they used to. hell, even that might be generous. I've enjoyed them as much as anyone over the years but they really don't have anything left to give.
I would rather no contest than an "all fictional character battle", to be completely honest. Absolutely no appeal to Homer/Batman/Whatever appearing in these things to me.

just check the stats topic. half the posts this year have been people trying to come up with a contest that doesn't suck. you can blame the bracket setup or the contest idea but does anyone seriously think the hierarchy would change if we had a regular contest? it would still be mega predictable.
The only reason I would ever want to see all fictional characters is to watch Link destroy them too and watch the board reaction as Link extinguishes the last hopes anyone has of him ever being defeated. >_>
Or perhaps it'd be better if Cloud and the rest of the upper-tier Noble Nine could take care of it before it even got that far. It might make it even more soul-crushing to think Link wasn't even bothered by it. <_<
...Seriously though, the idea of defeating Link in any conventional contest just seems futile at this point. If he must go, put him in an exhibition match and let us sort out Cloud/Mario/Snake and the like in a normal contest.

See, it still feels stale, even if it is less predictable than a contest with Link. About the only contest I'd actually be excited for is the 1v1 no generations game contest (and that includes fictional characters, because frankly, I don't really care which non-gaming characters GameFAQs likes).

Riiiiiiiight. This is one bad contest. Just a year ago, people were pretty high on these contests after the fantastically fun GotD. And as for the 57 perfect battlers - well, that's what happens when you get a contest with no earth-shattering upsets. Same thing would have happened in 2004 or maybe even the villains contest (and it had one big upset). As for the actual perfect brackets, we are going to finish with only one.

But anyways, I don't think the site as a whole is "nostalgia crazy." We ran a Contest featuring only games from the last decade last year, and it was awesome and drew great votals throughout. I also think there are plenty of newer games that could do very well in a mixed field (Skyrim, for example).
It's time to stop thinking we'll ever see FF > Zelda or Cloud > Link, I agree, but I disagree with everything else!

the new users aren't even terrible anymore. hell, there aren't even that many new folk and none of them stick around. people barely even complain about results anymore.

I know I'm probably in the minority on this, but the GOTD wasn't that great. Basically the final 2 days were great, better than we've seen in years, and most of the contest was pretty lame.

Anyway, it's all fictional character or bust from here. Would any of us really be too broken up if contests stopped? This is basically just a social board with intermittent contests.
I wish other sites like Gamespot actually ran a halfway decent contest. If they did it like Gamefaqs but with a different userbase to vote, it could be entertaining. The problem here is that we know like the exact strengths of all the main contest characters since they are here year after year for almost 10 years now. Theres no way it couldn't get predictable and boring now.
Either remove the elites and contest regulars (which would cause complaining and hits to go down), make it 4ways (which would make stat people complain) or add fictional characters (which would ruin the point of a video game character contest). None of those seem very appealing to the majority, so I dunno what they can do.

I'd like to see more new matches with more characters who are new to the contest or haven't been in it much. In other words, like a 256 character battle with 4 way matches, lets do it.

I don't care what anyone says, these things are dumb when everyone knows who will win in the end. If the same team won the Super 7 out of the last 8 years without it ever being close, I'd probably stop caring about Football. I haven't entered a contest for years now, and while I never cared about the prizes, the matches themselves are predictable now. It's just a waste of time that turns the board into **** for a couple months. Give me something new and unpredictable or just can it for a couple years... I'm leaning towards the latter.

Nah, I've pretty much given up on seeing things I actually like win big matches in these contests anymore.
After the site literally rallied a Zelda game to victory, I've conceded that point.

The thing is this match was literally the only thing I was looking forward to this entire contest. The only other thing that even drew the slightest bit of excitement was the Trainers' run, and it didn't draw all that much. This contest promised us a ton of boredom and- the most competitive Link/Cloud match in many years. All we got is the boredom.

Yes, the game that 70% of this board thought would get knocked out 4 rounds earlier by Pokemon!
But I'm not talking about new Contests being worth seeing because they could produce a new winner, necessarily, I'm just pointing out that GotD had tons of upsets and close matches and high votals and interest, and there's no reason why the same wouldn't be true for the all-generation Games Contest (or All Fictional).

I've been moping for a month. I do think that the stats topic people only started caring after Pokemon crushed their dreams again (god bless Pokemon), but as for me, I've hated this contest in every non-Pokemon or Phoenix Wright-related match. I hate people's stupid arguments about keeping Link in. I hate people's obsession with keeping all fictional characters, by far the most interesting concept remaining, in stillbirth.
