I'm not saying that, say, Jehova's Witnesses are disrespectful. But I am saying that I don't like people trying to invite themselves into my home to advertise their beliefs. I find that quite obnoxious, and while I've encountered some obnoxious atheists, going door to door is a level of obnoxiousness they have not yet stooped to.
They don't try and invite themselves in, nor do they attempt to be forcible or persistant. Often, they keep a list of houses who have shown they don't want to be revisited so as NOT to bother people such as that.
