They don't try and invite themselves in, nor do they attempt to be forcible or persistant. Often, they keep a list of houses who have shown they don't want to be revisited so as NOT to bother people such as that.
Or they specifically note which houses aren't interested in their stuff and soon enough everyone is aware of how "rude" the people who live there are for not being interested. Which was the experience my family had with this phenomenon while we lived in Germany, though I can't quite remember which group it was that was the problem. To condense: you can't try to pretend there is a definitive way that all members of a given group that does the door to door thing behave, there's definitely some that *do* want to be forcible and persistent (this is probably the first time I've heard anyone act like them persistently trying to invite themselves in isn't normal, for reference)


And this is the first I've heard of any of them being forcible about it.
