Of course. They're misguided into thinking that you can have complete control of your thoughts and emotion when you're cornered, as well as believe that there isn't a situation in which you have to kill to live through.
Funny thing about fear. Fear is what keeps us alive, it's also the main thing that kills us. The fear of dying, that drives us to actions that cause normally docile people to kill.
Honestly I don't think this is as clear-cut as you're making it sound. Ultimately a kid, however much of a douchebag bully, was killed and no charges were brought to the killer. I mean you have to be pretty strongly biased to think there's no grey area here.
