I never really understood the whole hero worship of the troops in general.
Propaganda. You think recruitment rates would be as high as they are if being a soldier didn't make you an instant hero? Or worse, if it meant you were seen as a bloodthirsty killer who blows up puppies? Then there's the fact that it makes it harder for people to criticize military operations since you have to be careful not to say anything about the heroes overseas. There's just a lot of reasons why the government has fostered this image of our military as heroes who you should never ever say anything bad about.
