people can feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but I feel Rent really set a boundary in terms of eras of Broadway and made such a significant impact in terms of expressing a demographic that was key to Broadway but mostly kept hidden away.

you're absolutely right. Rent is one of those musicals that we're kinda out the window of and it doesn't have the same kind of air as a lot of other classics, which is unfortunate because it deserves to be in the same sentence. without Rent, you don't have Hamilton. without Rent, you don't have countless gay guys in musical theater have something quite relevant to them represented shortly after the peak of the AIDS crisis. it was also out of place as a rock musical on broadway which ain't new but is still a rarity. hell, on just raw stats of awards or longevity it's up there too, as well as it having a movie adaptation to reach an even wider audience.
