Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just pick the first 4 you say when I do the tally. If you list the same character multiple times I'm going to count it as 1 vote. Be nice to others and their potentially bad opinions. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Don't take this topic series too seriously. If you're going to change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

Broadway Musical-specific rules: The musical needs to have had a significant run on Broadway, it did not need to debut on Broadway

YESTERDAY: There was half a page of Eli Manning-discourse but he only got two votes. Well, like three people voted just "Manning" so I guess they could have meant Eli?

Dan Marino had a miracle run, not getting a single vote until whoever was in 4th at the time already had 7. Slowly but surely Marino gained ground and looked like a lock for 4th... when after the Super Bowl wrapped up user Suprak_the_Spud changed his vote from Marino to Mahomes, giving Unitas an opening to tie things up in the final two votes. Go vote in the tiebreaker now!

Also Bahamut won the 4th Dragon spot

This is hard because there are a lot of deserving musicals and alot of people will pick things like Lion King or Hamilton and those are just wrong answers for the Mt. Rushmore.

Phantom of the Opera (longest-running show on Broadway)
Wicked (may have lost the Tony to Avenue Q in 2004 but it's a huge fantastic show too and is getting a movie this year as part of its twentieth anniversary)
Hamilton (biggest musical since the pairing of Wicked and Avenue Q, probably bigger, allowed other shows like Six to get an influence and audience too)
West Side Story (Stephen Sondheim needs a rep, period, but which show.....)

Shout-outs to Robert Lopez's work with Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon.

The Sound of Music
Phantom of the Opera
Rent
Hamilton

people can feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but I feel Rent really set a boundary in terms of eras of Broadway and made such a significant impact in terms of expressing a demographic that was key to Broadway but mostly kept hidden away.

I can accept West Side Story as a golden age representative, but I really think a Rodgers and Hammerstein should take the spot. Just like it'd be fool to not have an Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Phantom is the clear choice for that.

I am not a musicals person. I only have one strange memory tangentially related to Cats. One time we went to a restaurant that had one of those eating challenges, and they posted pictures and quotes from the people who had beaten it.

One dude wrote below his picture, "I laughed! I cried! It was better than Cats!"

So there you have it.

Phantom of the Opera
Hamilton

are probably the two standouts for old and new. that said:

Book of Mormon
The Lion King

would be the other main 2 that come to mind. the latter was basically proof that disney can make a legit broadway musical with their, well, animated musicals. since then they've had a number of them though nothing as impactful (and i hope the French Notre Dame one day goes there anyway). the former is another instance of pop culture (South Park) meeting the musical theater industry and being a ridiculous success and to this day still feels, and gets an audience, of a show for the everyman. if anything dressing up to see this award winner feels out of place and there's something to the casualization of broadway.

do have an honorable mention to Avenue Q as it honestly came out too early. it has clear hits with people online - songs of The Internet is for Porn, Everyone's a Little Bit Racist, they're both basically classic internet songs at this point. then again maybe it came out at the right time because launched Lopez's career before he went on to make Disney money by doing Frozen. in terms of overall impact this one might actually be top 4 it but the effects are too downwind. can't in good faith give it to Wicked as that's just too "broadway". it's the wrestler's wrestler pick over the audience.

you're absolutely right. Rent is one of those musicals that we're kinda out the window of and it doesn't have the same kind of air as a lot of other classics, which is unfortunate because it deserves to be in the same sentence. without Rent, you don't have Hamilton. without Rent, you don't have countless gay guys in musical theater have something quite relevant to them represented shortly after the peak of the AIDS crisis. it was also out of place as a rock musical on broadway which ain't new but is still a rarity. hell, on just raw stats of awards or longevity it's up there too, as well as it having a movie adaptation to reach an even wider audience.

That's a fair defense of Rent. I wasn't crazy about the movie and never saw it live, but it probably gave space to the success of Spring Awakening in 2006 as another impact of Rent.

Never saw the movie. It's not always been great when I've seen it live.

But like... not just Spring Awakening, but so much that came in this millennium has room to occupy because of the space Rent cleared. Subject matterwise, I'd say it directly leads to things such as Avenue Q and Book of Mormon.

There's also the read where Wicked and later Frozen owe their success to Rent if you give it credit for Idina Menzel, but that's a little slewed.

Either way, yeah, I don't think Cats, Wicked, Lion King have any room in this conversation ahead of Rent. It deserves to be here for what I feel are similar reasons to Hamilton being here.

I'm not an expert in this field, so I might be off base/exaggerating, but since no one else is arguing for it, I feel I should point out that Show Boat is regarded as the first "book" musical. I'm sure it wasn't the actual first, but it's responsible for moving musicals away from the revue style and into plays with actual plots.

Also, since no one's mentioned it so far, and while I don't think it deserves to be on the list, since it lives in the shadow of The Lion King I want to give an honorable mention to Beauty and the Beast. It was very influential in its own way albeit not for reasons directly related to theater itself. Disney bringing it to Broadway was widely blamed/credited (depends who you ask), with causing the city to double down on cleaning up Times Square so whenever someone speaks of a location being "Disneyfied" this is the genesis of that term.
