Not to minimize the rest of your response, but this is how realigning elections work. You chase voters wherever you're forced to be.

Nope, that's not how I view things. I'm not going to be a fascist because voters want fascism. If you're not in this to protect people, to improve things, why are you in it? Just to wield power, agnostic towards what that power does? I think we have too many people in politics like that already and that's how we got here. We cannot do anything worth doing with this view.

I also think this was an election largely determined by inflation and the anxieties that created. I don't see how tacking right on that would have helped. The campaign barely mentioned LGBT issues. They went far right on immigration, literally their only argument being that they would have signed the right-wing bill and Trump blocked it. On economics, I don't see how doing less would have helped energize the base or kept Latino men from switching to Trump.
