bats are not that great in close range as you may think. like in rooms. it takes a lot of space to wind one up. they're better for disabling then anything else short of a head shot. The reach is good but the space you need to take advantage, recovery time, are hindrances. If you can tank a bat swing, even if it breaks something, the attacker may be fairly open for a counter.

A knife has way less range, but is much deadlier in my opinion. you have slashing and stabbing abilities and a more nimble offense.

Swinging the bat is a finishing move, not the default mode of attacking. Jabbing, shoving, and parrying are the main techniques one should use, all of which the knife user will find difficult to counter.
