I keep hearing people dislike the story, which is weird because my best friend loves the story. Maybe I'll love it too, but I did like 2016's story. We'll see.

I feel like a lot of people have gripes with the gameplay of the new Doom games and use the story as a scapegoat because that was something traditional Doom lacked but was just fine without. I think the developers are so focused on including a story because they figure it's a good way to keep a wider audience more engaged. People tend to like lore snippets and constructed universes and all that, so those kinds of things tend to get included in games more nowadays.

I think the story in the new game adds onto the experience. You come and stay for the gameplay, but it's not like having a narrative takes away from that at all.
