The rolling health meter was a neat twist for the combat system, and it does have a quirky, unique tone to it. And the music is decent. Sure. Everyone loves these things, myself included.
But.
Then you have that wonky perspective that's halfway between isometric and bird's-eye, which is just weird. And the damn mushroomized status that will legit wipe your party, is uncurable without returning to town and almost every enemy in the dungeon casts it. And most of the bosses are just spamming your strongest magic. And the final dungeon is a massive spike in grindiness. And by the end of the game, you have literally about four slots per character of inventory space, with the rest being occupied by key items.
It's legit a bad game that gets a pass for being bad because it's filled with lolrandum humor. And sure, in this instance lolrandum actually works. But it simply doesn't carry an otherwise awful game.
Earthbound is a great game
