I get why he has so many criticisms of the first game. It was a revolutionary game when it was released but it was clunky and outdated even just a few years later.

I'm also not surprised he had so few criticisms of Super Metroid. It's a masterpiece.

I first played it maybe 5 years ago, myself.

It's not unplayable or anything, but yeah there's a lot to not like.

The first Metroid (and 2 on gameboy) didnt age well agreed, but they were first tries at the concepts. Super perfected the concept and then remakes latter made the first two into amazing games

I thought it was great and I largely have the same opinion, but I liked Metroid 2 more than he seemed to. I also think the first game sucks though (still beat it multiple times, but I beat a lot of shitty games back then). Zero Mission replaced it as far as I am concerned. I never want to play the original again. I appreciated him not using an emulator to remove the horrible tedium of refilling your energy tanks. It really is awful, and you can't appreciate how bad it was to play the game unless you do it. 30 minutes is about right.

yeah zero misson is the best way to play 1 and even the 3ds remake for 2 granted i find some flaws in that remake cuz i felt like they didn't have to be a 1 to 1 about it and revamp the boss fights it felt boring fighting the same type over and over again

I legit don't like Earthbound tbh.

The rolling health meter was a neat twist for the combat system, and it does have a quirky, unique tone to it. And the music is decent. Sure. Everyone loves these things, myself included.

But.

Then you have that wonky perspective that's halfway between isometric and bird's-eye, which is just weird. And the damn mushroomized status that will legit wipe your party, is uncurable without returning to town and almost every enemy in the dungeon casts it. And most of the bosses are just spamming your strongest magic. And the final dungeon is a massive spike in grindiness. And by the end of the game, you have literally about four slots per character of inventory space, with the rest being occupied by key items.

It's legit a bad game that gets a pass for being bad because it's filled with lolrandum humor. And sure, in this instance lolrandum actually works. But it simply doesn't carry an otherwise awful game.

nah it's a great game with a crappy inventory system and most of the fanbase agree about it
tho mother 3 is the final refined form they were going from 1 to 2 which imo is fantasic

He reviews good games more often these days than he used to. Recent episodes he's reviewed Blaster Master, SimCity, and Final Fantasy VI. But the episode just before this one was a revisit of NES Dragon's Lair so he still reviews shitty games too.

Or it could just be a good game thats not to your tastes but unfortunately some people have their heads so far up their ass they think anything they dislike is automatically bad.

I didn't say or imply it's bad. I said it's regarded highly with nostalgia glasses but janky and flawed. Overrated doesn't mean bad, talk about heads up asses.

Color me on the "Earthbound is overrated" train. It's absolutely quirky as shit and I love it for that alone, but I would much rather play other RPGs on the SNES.

Metroid 2 + Super Game Boy was my first introduction to the series. Used the Nintendo Power guide with the map to beat it. Loved it, then Super Metroid legitimately blew me away. It's probably why it is my favorite game of all time.

Not really. I don't think it is bad, why would I say that? Me thinking it is overrated is exactly as you said. It is my opinion on the reception of the game, no more no less. It isn't me attempting to dictate anything, just how I feel relative to my experience versus the general consensus.

The inventory space is literally the only thing I dislike about Earthbound. I like everything else about it.
