I consistently see takes like "oh it is revolutionary for the genre and has such gripping characters and story when all others don't" when...no. It's a really good game but it is not revolutionary, aspects of its story have been done before, and there's tons of RPGs that have well-written characters. It's an (admittedly great) RPG that appeals to people who hate anime and won't want to touch RPGs as a result.
