It makes sense since the water nation is pretty much subjugated and limited to the poles, while the vast majority of the population is earth and fire nation. But yeah either Katara or Aang (and maybe even Toph) would've trivialized the entire adventure and probably destroyed the entire prison. The point is that Sokka wanted to prove himself though, after failing the invasion. It's hubris but that's who he is. --- _foolmo_ he says listen to my story this maybe are last chance ...
