We had 2 that we used. One was local to us and at one point were 2 buildings down. If I was at the store and my friend needed one I would watch the store till he got his then I got mine. It was similar to how you described. Appointments take precedent over walkins. So how to keep working like a machine. There were 5 barbers+the owner+receptionist.. the owner and 1 barber would take walking the other 4 would have appointments during the day. Each of the barber's had a day they would do walkins. They would rotate. It was easier to use this barber because it was 8n a shopping center.

Now our other one was run by a older woman. As far as I remember it was all walkins. It was customary for the last person in to announce they were last so when the new person walked in they knew the order. In the late 00s it was often that we would stop in when working our 2nd location. See my friend had used her for years and her father before that. Her 40y and her father 20y. So she was more like a friend than anything. You might have to wait but it was always 100%. Even now the few times I leave the house it's to get my haircut there. She's a bit from the house but we try to kill 2 birds with one stone. I can't drive anymore so my dad takes me there drops me off goes eat lunch with a friend. Picks me up then return home. Once every 4 months

I just go to an old Vietnamese guy at the side of the road. He charges about 50 cents but I give him a dollar.
