I show up. Asian lady cuts my hair and tells me how handsome I am. I pay in cash with a generous tip.

This has only failed once in 10 years, when she said that she had coloring appointments for the next 5 hours.

Maybe it's a busy place and they're only open at certain times of the day.

Like they probably open 10am-5pm, and if they're crowded it'll be hard to get everyone a haircut especially if they only got like two of three people cutting hair on a good day

I'd rather walk into a Lady Jane's than some fuck ass barber shop telling me to use an app to make an appointment or whatever.

You are aware that theres a distinction between a barber and a hairdresser, TC?

As a general rule, hairdressers expect you to make an appointment and barbers dont, in my experience.

We had 2 that we used. One was local to us and at one point were 2 buildings down. If I was at the store and my friend needed one I would watch the store till he got his then I got mine. It was similar to how you described. Appointments take precedent over walkins. So how to keep working like a machine. There were 5 barbers+the owner+receptionist.. the owner and 1 barber would take walking the other 4 would have appointments during the day. Each of the barber's had a day they would do walkins. They would rotate. It was easier to use this barber because it was 8n a shopping center.

Now our other one was run by a older woman. As far as I remember it was all walkins. It was customary for the last person in to announce they were last so when the new person walked in they knew the order. In the late 00s it was often that we would stop in when working our 2nd location. See my friend had used her for years and her father before that. Her 40y and her father 20y. So she was more like a friend than anything. You might have to wait but it was always 100%. Even now the few times I leave the house it's to get my haircut there. She's a bit from the house but we try to kill 2 birds with one stone. I can't drive anymore so my dad takes me there drops me off goes eat lunch with a friend. Picks me up then return home. Once every 4 months

I just go to an old Vietnamese guy at the side of the road. He charges about 50 cents but I give him a dollar.

I had an old lady with an eye patch give me the worst haircut of my life. I was too young and scared to tell her I wanted to wait for another barber.

Usually when a barber gets popular enough the appointments are actually to your benefit since they booked like crazy and don't have the time to take walk-ins since all of their other clients make appointments. If you don't make an appointment then you'd run the risk of being forced to wait for hours in the hopes that they're able to find the time to deal with you in between all of their other appointments. So just call/text ahead of time and set something up.

always hated this aspect of a hair style. I just want to walk into a shop and get a decent cut. I'm not obsessive about my hair. We aren't gonna fight if it isn't perfect, we'll try harder next time. Don't over charge me, get the basics right, and I'll tip accordingly.

I mean.. if you need to make an appointment, why not just make an appointment?

You see your hair getting long, call or go online, make an appointment for their next availability and boom, done.

This is actual footage of me trying to get a walk-in haircut in 2021:

I dunno if I got Mandela'd or if everyone else just gets their hair cut once a week even in a pandemic but clearly requiring an appointment had been SOP for a very long time.

The place I go to takes walk-ins but I make an appointment anyway because you might have to wait a long time depending on how busy they are.

Sounds like you're trying to find a cool, trendy place to get your haircut. Just look for a normal ass place to get your haircut. No atmosphere, no frills, just a haircut.

I used to know a normal ass place to get your hair cut. It ruled. I gave the guy my usual line about how "if there's a book of hair styles, I never read it" and he said "that's ok, me neither" and he proceeded to give me a "regular men's haircut" and it was the best hair cut I have ever had in my life. And he charged $12. I tipped $6.

I managed to go one time before the place went out of business in 2014. Which sucks because every other barber in the world is like "ENTER THE IPA EUROPEAN STANDARD NAME FOR THE HAIRSTYLE YOU WOULD LIKE" and when I'm like "shorter?" they're like "WHO IS A CELEBRITY YOU WOULD LIKE TO LOOK LIKE" I'm like "Uh... I don't know any celebrities" and then I look around desperately for pictures on the wall but every dude in the posters looks like he has been through a damn tornado instead of having a NOT PSYCHOTIC hair style and then I run out of the barber shop crying and shut myself in for a week because deep down the only person who really understands me is Ronnie Filyaw.

I understand people having social anxiety. I don't understand not being able to handle getting a haircut.

Finding a new place sucks, but if you don't like the one you tried... Go to a different one. I've never lived anywhere without plenty of barber/salon options.

I go to a chain, but it does a combination of appointments and walk-ins. There's one person I trust with how kinky my hair gets.

But yes, keep looking if one place doesn't agree with you.
