If you're thinking about playing the whole series, my advice for ME1 is to just speed through the main game, which can honestly be done in like 10 hours. The characters are boring in the first game and the side quests are almost entirely crap. The main plot is probably the best part and there's a pivotal plot twist that you don't want to miss by skipping to ME2. Then, if you fall in love with ME2, you can go back and see if it's worth it to give ME1 a more thorough playthrough.
