Culture as a whole has been very stagnant since the mid 2000s. You could even argue since 9/11, but the centralized internet beginning around 2006/2007 is probably a more accurate starting point.

In fact, I'd argue the day to day life of most americans has been relatively unchanged since late 06/2007/early 2008.

Financial collapse begins in 07/08, something id argue we still havent recovered from
Facebook opens to the general public
Twitter sees exponential growth due to the 07 SXSW conference
Netflix streaming begins
Youtube bought by Google
iphone (not even close to the first "smartphone", but the one that ushered in the current era no doubt) launches

Day to day life of most americans for the past decade
1) Wake up to their phone alarm, immediately looking at social media after getting up
2) Get ready for work/school
3) Hear about how much the economy sucks at work/school, browsing the internet while "learning" or "working" (like me right now!)
4) Get home, eat, sit in front of the couch/chair and do more internet based activities. On a Friday/Saturday maybe go out with friends
5) Go to bed.

The 80s saw the personal computer. The 90s/early 00s saw the internet. The 50s/60s saw the superhighway system, along with the rise of TV. The 70s were a recession, and I'd argue its because they are more similar to what we are seeing today. The 70s saw a bit of a stagnation of culture.

2016 probably marks the beginning of a new era, but that era seems to be a lot more tension filled domestically and foreign. Mostly because so many people now stay in their homes glued to the internet with their TV on in the background, then got mad. I mean the entire election for the fucking president was a product of this on both sides. The internet world has spilled over into the real world, mainly due to how the internet has been shit since 2007ish.
