That's not really true, just budget things are actually made to a budget, if you buy anything that isn't obviously tat, there's plenty of quality and craftsmanship.

Back then you simply didn't have the option of cheap, disposable everything.

The option existed, but Americans still had a stronger nationality so it was worth paying extra for US made quality. Taking the cheaper alternative was for communists.

Exactly. A kid has no real world view until maybe 10. The first thing I remember happening in the world was the first gulf war. And there was a college shooting 10 miles from me a couple years before and have no memory of that. Like I said you're being a kid. And if you had good parents you had no idea.

Culture as a whole has been very stagnant since the mid 2000s. You could even argue since 9/11, but the centralized internet beginning around 2006/2007 is probably a more accurate starting point.

In fact, I'd argue the day to day life of most americans has been relatively unchanged since late 06/2007/early 2008.

Financial collapse begins in 07/08, something id argue we still havent recovered from
Facebook opens to the general public
Twitter sees exponential growth due to the 07 SXSW conference
Netflix streaming begins
Youtube bought by Google
iphone (not even close to the first "smartphone", but the one that ushered in the current era no doubt) launches

Day to day life of most americans for the past decade
1) Wake up to their phone alarm, immediately looking at social media after getting up
2) Get ready for work/school
3) Hear about how much the economy sucks at work/school, browsing the internet while "learning" or "working" (like me right now!)
4) Get home, eat, sit in front of the couch/chair and do more internet based activities. On a Friday/Saturday maybe go out with friends
5) Go to bed.

The 80s saw the personal computer. The 90s/early 00s saw the internet. The 50s/60s saw the superhighway system, along with the rise of TV. The 70s were a recession, and I'd argue its because they are more similar to what we are seeing today. The 70s saw a bit of a stagnation of culture.

2016 probably marks the beginning of a new era, but that era seems to be a lot more tension filled domestically and foreign. Mostly because so many people now stay in their homes glued to the internet with their TV on in the background, then got mad. I mean the entire election for the fucking president was a product of this on both sides. The internet world has spilled over into the real world, mainly due to how the internet has been shit since 2007ish.

Its more so that "shitposting" is just now in the real world. I mean thats what this election was. We are getting fucking stupid because of the internet.

American history post WW2

1945 to 1962 General WW2 celebration
1962ish to 1973: Cuban Missile Crisis in late 62, JFK and MLK assassinations in 1963
1973 to early 80s: Nixon opens trade with China (not the only factor to outsourcing but probably the biggest government factor), economy starting to significantly be hit by outsourcing (especially rust belt)
Early 80s to 1989: Personal computer ushers in new era of processing.
1989 to 2001: Berlin Wall falls, 90s "vacation decade"
2001 to 2007: 9/11 immediate aftermath
late 06/2007/2008 to 2016: Financial markets collapse, Centralized internet
2015/2016 - present: Brexit, most atrocious election season occurs due to social media (on both sides), new era of fear based society.

Fuck social media that came to prominence in the mid 00s.

also MGS2 is the best game ever made.

This topic made me think...
The way the world is like today, it must be almost impossible for modern kids to really understand how it was like to grow up in the 80s.
No cellphones, computers were not as popular, it existed multiple home computer formats that were not compatible with each others, a slowass modem was a dream.
Wanted to contact a friend? Use a landline phone and hope that he was home. Oh, and no number presentation.
Videogames?
Hook the console to a TV and start it. It played games offline, thats it. It did nothing more.
The world itself was a darker place with two superpowers that could nuke the crap out of each others at least five times each. It was lighter than earlier decades, but the thought of worldwide devastation still existed.
The clothes... its impossible to explain the clothes...
TV?
Alright, cable existed and satellites started to be popular, but where I grew up we only had two TV channels. Both Public Service channels.
And to physically rent VHS tapes, or even Betamax...
