Having a story that isn't always bluntly solved with the power of friendship and is otherwise filled with silly, random humor would be harder to write. I don't mind the "the power of friendship" trope, my issue with the Pokemon anime is how bluntly it's applied. The Yu-gi-oh series is also heavily "the power of friendship" themed but it disguises it much better. It also helps that situations in Yu-gi-oh can often be more serious, and they keep changing the protagonist so the story doesn't become too stale. --- 1.
