I've been marathoning it with my niece recently upon her request. I thought I'd enjoy it too, because every Pokemon fan says its absolutely amazing, but it's really not. Even with the overarching "plot" it still really sucks, and lacks the great pacing that I was told it has.

I should do an indepth topic where I analyze every episode and say exactly why it sucks. Because it does.

I think when they say "amazing" it means "amazing compared to the rest of the series." Which really means it's a mediocre anime at best.

Maybe its amazing compared to the rest of the series as a whole, but the plot bits here aren't as good as the plot bits for DPPt. Why should I care about Alain and that little kid as Ash's rivals when neither brings anything to the table besides one working for the evil team, but generally being a decent guy, and the other being a total jobber who can't win his way out of a paper bag?

Ash is really the main problem holding everything down
as long as hes the main character in the picture the anime will never be more than mediocre
he's such an awful protag, almost zero redeeming qualities other than "but people recognize him"

It's not just him, it's his whole crew. Serena and Clement don't bring anything of interest besides being the cute girl/love interest and comedic deus ex machina guy.

Bonnie's interesting and funny, but she's never at center stage enough for her contributions to make the episodes any better.

Team Rocket is consistently great though. They're not TOTALLY compelling characters, but they at least have consistent characters that are semi-interesting no matter what they do.

not gonna lie, the series(XYZ) did get pretty bad ass when it got "dark" which happens towards the end

Honestly a more mature series would be more interesting but for some reason they want to limit it to just an audience of kids, which is completely understandable

Why they can do both is beyond me

It's because it's easy to write for.

Having a story that isn't always bluntly solved with the power of friendship and is otherwise filled with silly, random humor would be harder to write.

I don't mind the "the power of friendship" trope, my issue with the Pokemon anime is how bluntly it's applied.

The Yu-gi-oh series is also heavily "the power of friendship" themed but it disguises it much better. It also helps that situations in Yu-gi-oh can often be more serious, and they keep changing the protagonist so the story doesn't become too stale.
