To be fair though, that's not really clear. It wasn't clear back with EoE hit theaters either. We're retroactively welding the stories together here with the benefit of nearly twenty years. For most people watching back in the nineties, what TC saw was all there was, and all there was clearly wasn't finished. Then there's all the stuff happening behind the scenes with the director and his apparent frustration with the project, production issues, and the fandom. I think this is a perfectly legitimate way to experience Eva. The only thing that's missing is the internet fandom's reaction, and the ways the Japanese animation industry changed to explore these new emotional dimensions within its medium. That said...

There definitely is. There is a lot of payoff given in this movie, and a lot of iconic anime moments which are great points of references to have when watching some of the stuff that came afterwards.
