I sort of liked where it went, but I don't think I liked that it went there if that makes sense. Or at least that it totally abandoned the story for it.

Eh, Evangelion defines pretentiousness. It's really shallow, but it will pretend to have a lot of depth with meaningless metaphors and symbolism.

You watched End of Evangelion right? This always needs to be clarified in these topics.

No, just read the synopsis for it, though. I don't really have any desire to watch any more.

I understand that impulse, and to be honest the movies won't really leave you feeling any better about how things ended. Still EoE's animation and composition is excellent, and there's a lot to take in here. Even if you're not entirely sure you're enjoying it, you will almost certainly feel something even if that's just emotional exhaustion. There's no rush, but I do think it's worth watching eventually.

The ending of Evangelion is literally "we ran out of money, here's a slide show".

And then the movie ending is just pretentious bullshit. That show is like, composed of 3 or 4 good episodes mixed in with 22-23 bad episodes.

EoE seems so unnecessary. There's no point to it

To be fair though, that's not really clear. It wasn't clear back with EoE hit theaters either. We're retroactively welding the stories together here with the benefit of nearly twenty years. For most people watching back in the nineties, what TC saw was all there was, and all there was clearly wasn't finished. Then there's all the stuff happening behind the scenes with the director and his apparent frustration with the project, production issues, and the fandom. I think this is a perfectly legitimate way to experience Eva. The only thing that's missing is the internet fandom's reaction, and the ways the Japanese animation industry changed to explore these new emotional dimensions within its medium. That said...

There definitely is. There is a lot of payoff given in this movie, and a lot of iconic anime moments which are great points of references to have when watching some of the stuff that came afterwards.

I actually prefer the series ending to the movie ending. The first half of the movie is fine, than it just goes into major wtf territory.

I like to believe the first half of the movie actually takes place before the final episode of Eva anyway, since that episode is apparently taking place inside instrumentality, much like the latter half of EoE. I think most viewers hold that opinion actually. Where things diverge is whether or not you want to try to treat the movie and anime as alternative endings, or try to fit them into the same continuity.

I'll watch it, but it just feels like they never had any intention or desire to tell the story of the angels and what not and just wanted to make characters and put them in a situation where they could then say the shit about the human psyche they said in the last 2 episodes. That's fine and I enjoyed it, but it doesn't seem like there's anything else to be covered or gained by watching a fleshed out version of the ending.

A lot of the Eva lore comes from supplementary materials. If I'm not mistaken there was a PS1 Eva game that even had a glossary or terms explicitly laying out what the angels are and why they seek Adam. I'm pretty sure you can find an entire translation in a wiki somewhere. Anyhow, the series isn't really about the angels and preventing the apocalypse. It's clearly much more interested in the decaying metal health of the Eva pilots and the general dysfunction within NERV, which is fun to watch until it gets dark.

I'll agree that the movie doesn't really change up much about the plot, but it gets really interesting of you look at End of Eva as Hideaki Anno's final argument in what was then an ongoing conversation with his fans and their demands for the series' end.

Seems like the case with many convoluted anime stories, in that the show was designed to bring sexy women, giant robots, and big dramatic explosions to the screen. Then they realized they needed a plot too. So they stuck in some half-baked metaphysical nonsense like a slew of other anime, and called it a day.
