Good for you TC. >__>b
I had several surgeries starting around the age of fifteen and had a stroke after one of them, yet I still chose to finish high school while recovering. I even went to college and medical school, as the choice felt far more respectable than sitting around and feeling sorry for myself, collecting SSDI.

I'd rather not do SSDI, to be honest. I just wish my parents were more supportive of me, since whenever I try to do things for myself, they sometimes are reluctant and (pathetically) dismiss ideas I was seriously looking into(I.e. plumbing apprenticeship programs that one local union does, veterinary assistant training program at this one community college, etc). Long story short(though it sounds weird), I think my parents too much hold it against me that I dropped out of a 4 year college where I thought things would work out for me about a decade ago. :( And I really wish they'd stop poo-pooing and dismissing decent ideas for career training programs, I read up about online.

I really do try to pursue things and look into possible career training programs, but don't like how I wish they'd support me more. There are a lot of things I've thought about, and I'm sure eventually I'll get my life onto more of that track. Honestly I'd rather find my way into some sort of reliable career(even if it wasn't the highest ever paying job), over SSDI. Since I don't want to be stuck in this same rut without a decent career, forever. And I know my parents can't support me forever....

What's important is that your trying.. So don't let them drag you down, start seeing it more as motivation. Motivation to escape, and hopefully to be a more improved/attentive parent to your own children. >__>b
And in the end, your parents likely aren't bad people, more likely they're feeling their age, over-worked and burned out on life in general lol.
