I found it a bit odd that he has an obsession for male Primarina, since the appeal of Primarina comes from its feminine appearance. When I played through Pokemon Sun/Moon, I made sure that I got a female Popplio for my starter. The gender ratio is a bit messed up though, since the game has Primarina as 88.1% Male. I know this is just Game Freak maintaining a tradition that's been in place for all of the starters, but they did introduce Chikorita in the same generation where gender first appeared in the series.
