To be fair, the Declaration of Independence was absolutely a terrorist manifesto.

This, although the founding fathers had far more support among the general populace than terrorist groups.

Clearly it's not that they're unaware that was from the Declaration of Independence. It's the fact that cherry-picking a line about a tyrannical leader could be misconstrued as a metaphorical political statement under the guise of an historical document. Obviously NPR tweeted it within the context of the Declaration's entirety. But unfortunately with Twitter, you only get 140 characters at a time. So for someone only seeing the single tweet out of context, their reaction is understandable.

This is why context matters!

It's possible as well. I was tempted to point that out. Historical documents and acts are routinely used to protest contemporary thing. In the case of a facebook post, the context for posting quotes from the Declaration would be clear as well because there'd be a preface celebrating the document rather than implying that the document is being applied to current events.

And, of course, when just one of the quotes shows up in your feed and you're reacting to it off the cuff (rather than going back and checking their full feed) -- particularly if somebody else shared or responded to it -- then the reaction is going to be different. It's one reason why Twitter is a terrible platform which shouldn't be used by anybody.

lolol come on now

We see "news" reports every hour about some dipsticks overreacting to some clickbait stories on twitter.

Yes, it's also non-news. The outrage is both overstated and meaningless in most cases.

Lol, the declaration is an attack on trump....fucking idiots.

Again, while it wasn't being used as such, you literally could use it to attack a president.

It's funny how some people think only Republicans responded to this as an attack on Trump, as if being ignorant is only something Republicans can do.

There's plenty of ignorant Democrats out there.

To be fair, given the context and subject material, this particular "bait" is far more likely to catch out ignorant Republicans than ignorant Democrats. If the subject matter was different (I can't think of any good examples off the top of my head) you could similarly catch a larger number of Democrats than Republicans.

You're kinda overlooking that more Democrats use Twitter than Republicans and the fact that Democrats also can react viscerally to this in a different way. At face value, the group who you'd expect to be offended would generally be more likely caught, but the nature of the platform and demographics kinda skew that.
