The funniest part was that NPR has recited the Declaration of Independence every year for 29 years straight, yet, it was only this year that they decided to go the Twitter approach and people freaked out as apparently they didn't pay much attention to history or government in high school and didn't realize what NPR was doing.

Morons.

To be fair, the Declaration of Independence was absolutely a terrorist manifesto.

...or, at least, it would have been seen as one if the British had won.

One man's patriot is another man's terrorist.

It just goes to show just how stupid some people are.

They're willfully ignorant of our country's history and they're proud of it. Most likely Trump supporters.

The funniest bit about it is that both democrats and republicans didn't know what they were reading.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/npr-declaration-independence-tweets-confuse-trump-supporters-article-1.3302847

WASHINGTON — National Public Radio marked the Fourth of July by tweeting the entire Declaration of Independence, but it seems some Twitter users didn't recognize what they were reading.

The broadcaster tweeted out the words of the declaration line-by-line Tuesday. Some of the founders' criticisms of King George III were met with angry responses from supporters of President Donald Trump, who seemed to believe the tweets were a reference to the current president. Others were under the impression NPR was trying to provoke Trump with the tweets.

NPR broadcast its annual reading of the declaration for the 29th straight year on Independence Day. This is the first year the tradition has been extended to Twitter.

Spokeswoman Allyssa Pollard says the tweets were shared by thousands of people and generated "a lively conversation."

Clearly it's not that they're unaware that was from the Declaration of Independence. It's the fact that cherry-picking a line about a tyrannical leader could be misconstrued as a metaphorical political statement under the guise of an historical document. Obviously NPR tweeted it within the context of the Declaration's entirety. But unfortunately with Twitter, you only get 140 characters at a time. So for someone only seeing the single tweet out of context, their reaction is understandable.

This is why context matters!

I don't see anything in that article about Democrats being fooled. You're just projecting your own ignorance like every other conservative does. It's really quite telling that a Trump supporter can see the word "tyrant" and immediately assume it's about Trump.

No, they were also wrong for the way the media is portraying it.

Like Whiskey said, some of the tweets were dead giveaways. I mean come on, a tweet about thirteen colonies? They're probably not talking about Civ 5.

What Snuggletoof is saying is that for twitter users who weren't paying attention to all of the tweets in order, seeing one specific tweet mentioning tyrants would lead people to react in the moment assuming that NPR was making some kind of statement.

Correct. I guess I'm just in the mindset that on Twitter, at least, people would think before reacting.

To be fair, given the context and subject material, this particular "bait" is far more likely to catch out ignorant Republicans than ignorant Democrats. If the subject matter was different (I can't think of any good examples off the top of my head) you could similarly catch a larger number of Democrats than Republicans.

And I get that.

However, it's ridiculous to assume that only Republicans could not make this connection that the tweets were about the Declaration of Independence and not Trump.

Idiocracy is not localized to only Republicans and to think that it is, is moronic.

It's possible as well. I was tempted to point that out. Historical documents and acts are routinely used to protest contemporary thing. In the case of a facebook post, the context for posting quotes from the Declaration would be clear as well because there'd be a preface celebrating the document rather than implying that the document is being applied to current events.

And, of course, when just one of the quotes shows up in your feed and you're reacting to it off the cuff (rather than going back and checking their full feed) -- particularly if somebody else shared or responded to it -- then the reaction is going to be different. It's one reason why Twitter is a terrible platform which shouldn't be used by anybody.

Yes, it's also non-news. The outrage is both overstated and meaningless in most cases.

Again, while it wasn't being used as such, you literally could use it to attack a president.

You're kinda overlooking that more Democrats use Twitter than Republicans and the fact that Democrats also can react viscerally to this in a different way. At face value, the group who you'd expect to be offended would generally be more likely caught, but the nature of the platform and demographics kinda skew that.

It's not bait because it's the truth.

There are many many people who voted for Trump that are massively ignorant of American history and are proud of that ignorance. The fact that these people don't recognize the Declaration of Independence when they see it is all the proof you need that what I'm saying is right.

Questionable. Tens of thousands of refugees fled for Canada when the loyalists lost the War of Independents, and even amongst those that remained there was strong support for eventual reconciliation with Great Britain.
