visual novels aren't equatable to one single series; they are a massively popular medium. less so outside of japan, but otaku isn't really a term applied to people living outside of japan except ironically

so it'd be more like you need to broaden your horizons if you only play Nintendo games

visual novels also allow more of a first person experience, like a book. rather than just watching things play out, it feels a lot more personal as you get to connect to the protagonist's thoughts and feelings more

besides, visual novels have audio and music, and when properly integrated they really ups the experience. if one of the two had to be pointless, it'd be manga. manga has great art, but it's just so much less.. which is also a strength, since it can be shit out more regularly
