Welcome one and all to our usual discussion of all things Japanese. Anime, manga and games are are usual talking points and as ever all are welcome, it's been a looooooong time since I've had chance to actually make the new topic so I only feel a bit of shame at triple posting the end of the last one (you guys usually end 'em while I'm sleeping anyway!)

So! anime-wise I finished Quan Zhi Gao Shou (The King's Avatar), it was pretty solid and I will watch the next season of it when it airs next year, I've just started Tsugumomo and eh, it seems like it might be okay

All is quiet on the games front of things for me, at least until Ys VIII releases later this year anyway

The JRPG front is quiet until next month, but next month is busy (e.g. Danganronpa V3). This month, there is the FFXII HD remaster, but that is more for other people in the family than it is for me (see also: the Crash Bandicoot remasters). Still no word on who is streaming Fate / Apocrypha in the U.S.

Finished season 2 of My Hero Academia. That arc was so satisfying. Great fights.

Also cool news, I got my server up and running. So my anime gets organized by program duo called Shoko server and Shoko Desktop. And then I can watch it anywhere using Plex

Fairy tail is the most disappointing Shonen ever. Followed by Toriko. I've never seen Manga go from A to wtf so quickly before.

I've been watching Saekano, since it's S2 finished airing last season. Boring/plain girl is amazing. There's a huge appeal to the juxtaposition between the other character's anime-ness and her lack of it.



I gotta gush about Miyuki Sawashiro being in fate/aprocypha. I couldn't ask for a better VA.

Also gotta gush about Saori Hayami voicing a MC in Kakegurui, a total nutcase/yandere for her passions.

Still not really watching/playing anything right now, just reading Malazan and on book 5. Probably gonna go to the book store next week and hope to find the tenth book in the series and start gathering the Esslemont six related books. Just gonna order the last book if I don't find it on my next trip though.

I enjoyed Hyperdevotion Noire, though I feel like they could have done more with it. Several fun characters in there, and I always like it when somebody takes the piss out of Square Enix.

I finally replaced my busted 360, so I'm playing a lot of my old favorites. No JRPG's yet, but I have Eternal Sonata, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, and just got Final Fantasy XIII.

The anime is pretty solid imo, however when you get to the Dressrosa arc (which is pretty late in the series) I would suggest switching to the manga for the duration of it as the anime draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags the hell outta it

So I started and finished Tsugumomo, while I didn't find it amazing I did think it was pretty solid, I wasn't expecting the fight scenes to be so solid either and pretty interesting to watch so that was a nice surprise, I'd give it a 7/10 and would watch more of it should a second season come around

Just now I started Renai Boukun and holy heck the pacing is super fast, the concept is simple yet amusing and the "kiss note" is a good knowing reference to the original source that I can accept it, episode 2 is next up so I'll see if the series can keep up with such a fast pace

Started reading a series called Kiss X Death.

It's basically Parasyte but with more tiddies.

The setup is, 5 alien criminals were banished to earth. The alien's species, which are only about two inches high, regard earth as an inhospitable place for them, so in order to survive they need to bond with other local lifeforms.

The criminals were sentenced to be forcibly bonded to lower class lifeforms (like mice and toads) and exiled from their homeworld, however they managed to slip from their jailer, kill him, and hijack of group of middle school girls. (it's also important to note that the girls were rather... homely looking. Definitely not waifu material)

What they didn't realize though is that their jailer survived, and managed to find a host body as well. Now he can enact his revenge and finish his mission by capturing the criminals once and for all.

Oh and about the tiddies part. Apparently the aliens can alter and power up the lifeforms they bond with so all those girls got UPGRADED like DAMN! And there's even a loli with an actual ass too!

Oh and to further complicate matters, the guy the jailer bonded with was your typical otaku dweeb only with an EXTREME fear of women. Like, debilitating, faint-when-he-sees-panties, amount. So yeah, that'll be an issue when they have to fight, and doubly so since the aliens live in the host's mouth and the only way the jailer can extract them is through direct contact. i.e. kissing.

So I finished S1 of Saekano,

It was a bit too haremy than I expected, especially towards the end, but I guess it was that kind of show to begin with. My favorite meta joke, is when a discussion about the VN naturally turns sexual, Tomoya dismisses by exclaiming that all content must be PG. Queue thoughout the show, moments when things get overtly sexual between him and a girl, and he "has" deny them.

The con is next week; I need to look at the panel and guest list to plan my time. Every year we have a Japanese band playing, usually making their US debut. I just wonder why we so often get visual kei bands. This year we've got Avanchick; anyone know them?

I've only played three. Clannad, Tomoyo After, and Saya no Uta. Clannad because, playing the VN before the anime was the true otaku experience, and I achieved it. Saya no Uta is the most fucked up, depraved, but sweet romantic story I've ever experienced, and it will never get an anime adaptation.

I couldn't get through fate/stay night because reasons. I read the 1st route as a lets play while UBW was airing. Because of familiarity and length, I couldn't get through it when I actually had the game installed, and now because the 3rd route is getting a film series, I have even less interest in finishing it.


I haven't watched Steins;gate yet because I intend to play the VN.

I'm also interested in Danganronpa, Zero Escape, and Umineko.

It's a bit like saying, "Oh, I went to the cinema for Finding Dory, Beauty and the Beast, and Pink Flamingos." (... IMDB that last one at your peril.)

Wasn't digging book 5 as much, but I am very much enjoying the exchanges between Tehol and Bugg. Actually, that whole group is the best part of the book so far. I'm a little under halfway through the book.

I just watched Touken Ranbu, and I'm doubly disappointed that fate/apocrypha is being handled by A-1 Pictures rather than Ufotable. There's nothing really wrong with A-1, but their animation lacks a distinct personality and overall cohesion. It really shows that they outsource all animation. Ufotable on the other hand, really shows why they're a master at their craft at blending cgi/effects and animation.

Both shows have a cold opening, and I implore you to watch those scenes if you want to see how distinguished/undistinguished either studios are.

Heh, Clannad is the prime candidate for me to try as my first VN since I really loved the anime so it'd be the opposite experience for me, I'll see if I can get my hands on it and give it a go sometime soon

Oh, another visual novel I forgot. Not technically one, but they're very similar. In the west, they're called adventure games. They died out in the 90's, and there's been small resurgences of it in 2010's.

It's called Star control 2. It's made it to many lists of greatest games of all time, and probably has a lot of influence on the Mass Effect series. It has a free modern port for anyone interested.

Consensus among my Crunchyroll buddies is that Clockwork Planet is a hot mess, Zoro. Several give it the "Worst of the Season" distinction. But it does have a high loli quotient.

I agree. A-1 Pictures is the vanilla ice cream of anime studios. They do a lot of stuff, but none of it is exceptional in quality. And I feel like Ufotable is wasted on fujoshi trash like Touken Ranbu, but that is my opinion. *shrugs* My only concern for Ufotable is that they can get bogged down (see: God Eater).

Speaking of Fate / Apocrypha, it looks like that will most likely be showing up on U.S. Netflix ... in November. *shakes head* Having to wait sucks, especially with Fate / Extra (by Shaft!) happening in the same season (IIRC).

Tonight: Netflix Castlevania! Ooo, yes.

Been too busy with games to realize the anime season had ended until today (mostly mount and blade: warband lately) but finally noticed and watched eromanga-sensei. I liked oreimo quite a bit so I figured I'd enjoy this one as well and I did in fact enjoy it quite a bit. I've heard it called a masterpiece of trash and thats not too far off. I especially liked elf which is odd as I usually am not a huge fan of ojou-sama types but I found they took that trope and added enough unique quirks to it to make it enjoyable. If sagiri wasn't engineered to be mandatory best girl I'd probably give it to elf. Other writer girl kind of just existed pointlessly and slutty but not really school girl just kinda vanished for most of the series. Same with bookstore girl.

Its kinda strange for the harem victor to be so convincingly decided so early on but its kind of a nice mix up. Feel a little bad for the other girls but they knew what they were getting themselves into. Would be happy for a season 2 but it ended at a nice place if there isn't one. A very fun show, all things considered.

I actually didn't know if it was finished or not, so I googled it.

Apparently it's on its last season now and it's set to end by 2018.

So I finished Clockwork planet, it was.. hmm.. okay I suppose? while the characters were kinda eh and the story was missing a few important points the show did at least have some interesting ideas, less loli designs and bad humour would've helped too, overall a 6/10

Just now I finished er.. the title is too long for my taste so I'll just go with it's equally-long English name: WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us? (I just shorten it to WorldEnd now), anyway it was surprisingly decent, the story- while not completely original- was interesting and the ending leaves a lot open, I'd give it a 7/10
