They have internal injuries or missing parts. I feel like this underestimates the durability of these guys in general. Like, turn the tables. Say that Diablo's frozen for the first 5 seconds of the fight, and Dark Samus gets 5 seconds of free Phazon blasts at him. Or Raiden gets 5 seconds of uninterrupted blade attacks. I think the notion that Diablo dies from that is laughable, and he's not going to be "crippled" either -- it's just 5 seconds, dude is mostly okay. Dark Samus is comparably tanky imo. Raiden/Lightning not quite as much, but they're still reasonably tanky. They are not in absolute top form but they take injuries in-game and keep on fighting through them, they'll manage. --- another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high ...
