I've mentioned this before, but the old generational cohort system is kind of outdated now, because the increasing importance of media and pop culture over historical events in society has sort of accelerated the pace of zeitgeist development.

In other words, in the old days a cohort that spanned 20-30 years made sense, and would likely have a similar outlook and demographics, but in modern times 10 years is about the longest you can cap a group and still get them to identify well with each other.

If anything, the Internet's usual trend of dividing people up as "80s kids", "90s kids", and "00s kids" is probably a better system at this point.

Especially when, as you pointed out, most people can't agree on an official definition of what the older generation groups are and when they start/end anyway.
