There is no suffering since all VR hardware is selling way above expectation making profit (except maybe Oculus but lol facebook) and software is selling as well (it's hard, but wayyy easier than a PC/console game).

The main thing damaging VR and holding us back is "hardcore gamers" who see absolutely mindblowing and amazing unique games like Tiltbrush and Superhot for VR and are like "ugh I don't want these toys and 2 hour demos, I want SKYRIM and DOTA 2 on VR".

Those people will never get into VR and they will get left behind by the industry just like the "hardcore gamers" who only like SNES RPGs and such. But they are a very large voice now that is hurting a lot. Fortunately indies and AAAs mostly don't listen to those people, but there is still cheap shovelware trying to appeal to that.
