Kind of seems like it's gone out with a whimper.

I know games are TECHNICALLY being made still, but has all of the hype surrounding it disintegrated?

I hope there's more

Resident Evil 7 was VR's Mario 64 and I was looking forward to more experiences like that.

I should probably download Super Hot VR I hear that's pretty good

Absolutely. Before these things launched the industry was losing their collective shit about it, as were people who played them at trade shows.

.....I don't know of that hype ever hit the mass market, though. I know PSVR sold well, but the attach rate seems weak.

No, the VR games were shown in the press conference. Although, after looking them up there aren't as many as I thought there were:

Until it becomes affordable for the masses and less of a novelty for those willing to pay a premium you wont see much in the way of big games for it.

Right now you are basically looking at buying a console on top of a console for VR. That pretty much instantly crushes the install base.

Non-enthusiast hype is kinda gone now. Enthusiast hype is very much still there. It still feels like a gold rush for developers and I am personally increasingly anxious the longer I wait to make a VR game. Nothing is set in stone yet design wise. Especially movement techniques, which is very exciting.

Mainstream accessibility WILL come, it's just taking a while. Momentum in sales and development is still above expectations so no worries there.

Also, non-enthusiasts still absolutely flip their shit any time they see a VR setup at an expo or festival or whatever. Kinda funny since it's so easily attainable now.

I think it's still an exciting time for developers who actually want to explore the medium, but the ones just trying to make a quick buck with a shooting gallery are starting to get burned and potentially ruining it for the rest at the same time

I feel like VR has the potential to bring arcades back in a limited capacity. It has significant cost and space requirements, especially with some of the more elaborate setups (such as the 360 degree treadmill that someone was showcasing for movement).

It'd probably only work in select areas where space is at a premium, though.

Its not dead. People are still very interested in the tech, which works well. It just has a few problems that keep it from really breaking out into mainstream right now.

First, its not affordable for the masses. It requires a really strong computer AND the VR set. So to even get started that's like a $600 investment if you have a good computer already and if you don't have one good enough, well that's another $1000 or more. Very, very steep for the average person.

Second, it has no killer apps that are both exclusive and have mass appeal. It has a few that come close (RE7 though you can play that on non-VR, for instance), but until we get a full, 'core game' that appeals to hardcore gamers, its going to have a hard time really taking off.

Third, this creates a feedback loop for developers. People won't buy the system because there are no core games on it, so developers can't justify spending the budget on one themselves. And because developers aren't willing to take the risk, people will continue to not buy the product, which in turn means the developers are even more inclined and justified to not put more money into it. This results in most games on the platform either being tech demos or shovelware.

Anyway, this isn't really like 3D gaming or something in that people have lost interest. There is interest, its just that this first generation isn't accessible or sustainable. There's a few different ways out of it, some that would get everyone out of the situation sooner (for instance, a developer taking a huge risk and sinking a ton of money into a core game exclusive to VR that ends up being a killer app that becomes a platform seller) but the most likely course of action is, as said by other people in the topic, we're just going to have to wait while they improve the tech so that it can get cheaper.

I think it got pushed out too quickly, much like most technical advancements in the industry, and it's suffering from the lack of tech and many uninspired shovelware titles crowding the market. We'll see VR become cheaper for consumers and developers actually making consistently good titles within the next few years, I would assume. Right now it just seems to be skirting the line of being a fad and having huge potential, and I would assume the latter is more likely.

There is no suffering since all VR hardware is selling way above expectation making profit (except maybe Oculus but lol facebook) and software is selling as well (it's hard, but wayyy easier than a PC/console game).

The main thing damaging VR and holding us back is "hardcore gamers" who see absolutely mindblowing and amazing unique games like Tiltbrush and Superhot for VR and are like "ugh I don't want these toys and 2 hour demos, I want SKYRIM and DOTA 2 on VR".

Those people will never get into VR and they will get left behind by the industry just like the "hardcore gamers" who only like SNES RPGs and such. But they are a very large voice now that is hurting a lot. Fortunately indies and AAAs mostly don't listen to those people, but there is still cheap shovelware trying to appeal to that.

Well they all use your head as a first person view into the world, but it is not necessarily first person to the thing you are controlling. There are lots of third person games where you are a camera floating above your character and you can look around and stuff.

The PC market is bigger than consoles now. It's not really niche. VR isn't getting bigger than consoles any time soon.

I think there is a future for VR but it's not in he form of personal use. An arcade style experience would be a better way of doing it. With investors dropping out in large numbers, I do think it will fade, but not die necessarily.

Or maybe it will just go away and come back in twenty years.

I'm mostly disappointed that it's not really VR. It's more of an enhanced form of 3D or whatever. Whenever I've seen VR in sci-fi works and such, it's more something that hooks into your nervous system so you actually feel everything that's happening. It's kinda too bad they stole the name for this pseudo-VR stuff.

Is it? All the reports I see have PC game software sales below console game software sales dollars. Maybe it depends on the country or something?

Probably got promised a lot more than what they ended up getting, or any number of business shenanigans. If they drop out and no one wants to replace them, then it's a problem.
