She and her family prefers dealing with hurricanes instead of earthquakes in the west coast. I think her reasoning is one could be aware of and prepare for said hurricane whereas an earthquake can hit without warning at which point you can only hope your earthquake kit is adequate. I grew up in South Florida as well, and this has usually been my perspective...but then you look at picture of Hurricane Andrew's aftermath in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and realize how quickly shit can go terribly wrong. Hell, Hurricane Katrina touched land right where I lived for a weekend before "bouncing" off us and heading for Louisiana. In Hurricane Harvey's case, it upgraded to a category 4 in such short notice. You can't evacuate the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. in a matter of what, two days? It's a really shitty situation to witness.
