Figure I'll go ahead and give this its own thread to spread the word around:

http://ngplus.net/index.php?/forums/topic/203-hurricane-harvey-relief/

tl;dr this isn't a request for donations, just me pointing people who wish to donate towards a place where it will do the most good.

Have you been hit hard? Last I saw people were paddling through the streets with canoes.

Me personally, no. I've been affected in that I've had to ride out my shift a *lot* longer than everyone else because all of the other operators are flooded in and can't come relieve me and my B2B.

Also, this is Lily's neighborhood: https://scontent-dft4-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t35.0-12/21198396_10210186171757201_446329834_o.jpg?

Damn

Katrina had the issue with levees breaking and releasing seawater on a very low lying city, less rainfall but maybe more water overall. Hard to measure.

This Houston situation is also quite serious

Where is that water even supposed to go? Joel Osteen could shove it up his ass and solve things, but we know that's unlikely.

It flows into the bayous and then back out into the gulf.

Houston's roads are actually build for flood control, which is why they fill up so damn fast.

they designed the roads to be water collection pathways?

A lot of cities do this. Up in Sacramento if it ever gets major flooding all the water is designed to divert onto the highway since it sets lower then the city.

Not to make light of the situation but I had a guildmate in World of Warcraft who lives in Florida. She and her family prefers dealing with hurricanes instead of earthquakes in the west coast. I think her reasoning is one could be aware of and prepare for said hurricane whereas an earthquake can hit without warning at which point you can only hope your earthquake kit is adequate.

But honestly, regardless of what warnings are given, how can one truly prepare for a disaster of this magnitude? Even with flooding insurance and whatnot it gotta get mentality and physical exhausting eventually. I can only hope all the affected citizens will recover in one way or another.

I don't really think that is fair to say. Normal hurricanes, sure. But this has basically put a major city under the ocean.

I lived in south florida for a while and went through 4 hurricanes, Francis being the worst since Andrew to hit the area. I went without power for 2 weeks. Not really on the same level here.

Touche. We have had plenty of magnitude 3-4ish earthquakes out there. So small that I sleep through them. If/When a big one hits though then we'll truly feel the sting of it. There is only so much anyone can do to prepare for such disaster short of having a second home in another state. After seeing videos and pictures of this, it truly is baffling and frightening.

I grew up in South Florida as well, and this has usually been my perspective...but then you look at picture of Hurricane Andrew's aftermath in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and realize how quickly shit can go terribly wrong. Hell, Hurricane Katrina touched land right where I lived for a weekend before "bouncing" off us and heading for Louisiana.

In Hurricane Harvey's case, it upgraded to a category 4 in such short notice. You can't evacuate the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. in a matter of what, two days? It's a really shitty situation to witness. I think I'd still choose hurricanes over earthquakes in terms of prep time, but yeah...when they're at their worst, they can do a whole lot.

This is insane

I have to admit. Even as bad as things are there, there is just something cool about the idea of taking a motorboat and just boating down a highway.

Anyway, here's hoping Irma decides NOT to be the sequel Texas doesn't want.
