It's worth remembering that they sent conscripted children using old ass soviet equipment into a country with no plan. I'm glad Ukraine is doing well, but Russia still has about 900,000 active duty personnel and 2,000,000 reservists not deployed in Ukraine and the vast majority of their air, sea, and kinetic capabilities haven't been deployed either. It would be stupid or suicidal to pretend that this extremely poorly planned out invasion accurately reflects Russia's overall military readiness.

I figured they didn't send their best troops and equipment because they thought Ukraine would fall easily.

Or maybe it's like how Santa Anna sent in his slackers first against the Alamo to deplete the defenders of resources before sending in his main troops.
